I gave up on brushes and went back to the cheap puff

Watching YouTube tutorials made me buy a drawer full of tools

I really thought if I just bought the right brush, my makeup would stop looking like a desert floor by noon. Everyone online keeps talking about these high-end foundations like Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Airbrush Flawless’ line or those fancy serum-glow ones, and they always look so perfect in the videos. So, naturally, I assumed the secret was the application tool. I went to Daiso and bought a handful of those pore brushes and weirdly shaped sponges. I spent maybe 15,000 won total on various shapes—flat ones, angled ones, and those tiny ones for color correcting. It felt like I was leveling up my makeup game. But in reality, standing in front of my bathroom mirror at 7:30 AM, it was a completely different story.

The reality of streak marks and patchy foundation

The pore brush I picked up was supposed to be a game-changer. The bristles felt soft enough on my hand, but when I actually applied my liquid foundation, it felt like I was painting a fence. It left these tiny, visible streaks all over my cheeks. I kept trying to buff it out, but that just ended up lifting the product off my nose, making the whole situation look worse. It’s supposed to be a ‘pore-blurring’ tool, but instead, it just highlighted every single texture issue I didn’t even know I had. I tried to follow the advice of using thin layers, but brushes just seem to move the product around rather than pressing it into the skin. I ended up looking more uneven than when I started.

Trying to fix the mess with a water droplet puff

After the brush disaster, I reached for the water droplet-shaped puff I’d tossed in my makeup pouch months ago. I usually kept it there for touch-ups, but it became my only hope for salvaging my face before work. Dampening it and dabbing it against the cakey spots felt like a relief. It definitely hides the streaks better than the bristles, but then I realized it absorbs so much product. I feel like I’m wasting half of my expensive base just feeding the sponge. It’s annoying because while it works, the cleaning process is tedious. I hate having to wash these things every two days, and they never seem to dry properly in the humid bathroom corner. I keep telling myself I should just buy a pack of new ones every week, but that feels wasteful and adds up.

The struggle with concealer and smaller brushes

I also bought a specialized concealer brush because I have these annoying dark circles. It’s a flat, thin thing, and it looks professional, but it’s just not practical for my morning speed. I have to spend extra minutes carefully placing the pigment, and if I’m off by a millimeter, it looks unnatural. Sometimes I wonder if these tools are meant for people with all the time in the world. When I look at those ‘cover perfection’ pen concealers, the ones that come with a built-in brush, I get tempted again. It looks so easy. Maybe it’s not the tool, but the fact that I’m trying to hide things that won’t go away just by slapping on more product.

Still uncertain if I’m doing it wrong

My forehead and jawline are still the biggest problem areas. They always start flaking by lunch, no matter if I use a brush, a puff, or even just my fingers. People say ‘don’t rub, just press,’ but my hands have a mind of their own when I’m running late. I’ve spent way more than I wanted to on various puffs and brushes, and honestly, the result isn’t that much better than when I just used a basic wedge sponge. I’m not sure if I should keep experimenting with different materials or if I just need a different moisturizer. For now, I’ve shoved the fancy brushes into the back of my cabinet and am sticking to the basic puffs. At least the puffs are cheap enough that I don’t feel guilty tossing them when they get too stained. I still don’t have a perfect routine, and most mornings, I just end up settling for ‘good enough’ so I can get out the door.
